You will note that the fabric background and green construction paper border that has been up all year is still serving as my backdrop. I also brought out Aggie, who is Wuzzy's counterpart here in my middle school health promotion efforts. The little mouse over on the right lower corner is Squeak, who is the voice of the little guys, the ones who don't fit in, the ones who are afraid they will be stepped on or overlooked. The boy and girl are thinking responses to the question posed. Each thought bubble has a statement. "I will use my hands to help, not to hurt." "I will use my voice for songs, not slurs." "I will do something nice for someone every day." " I will reach out in friendship to new students in my school." etc. The inspiration for this board came from an article in NEA Today highlighting the slogans used in a midwestern school peace rally. Squeak's voice says, "Peace begins with each of us doing what we can in our own little corner of the world." Aggie's voice says, " Peace begins with YOU!" Aggie was hand drawn for an earlier bulletin board. Squeak and the globes are enlarged clip art. The boy and girl were hand drawn for this board, to represent middle school students. They will be saved and reused for future bulletin boards. You could also ask students to draw the kids for your board, or you could use clip art or pictures from a magazine. OR, you might even use pictures of students from your school. I designed this simple bulletin board after the recent school shootings in the hope that I could do one small thing to promote peace in MY little corner of the world. |
