Gerri Harvey's Universal Precautions Rap

I saw the blood,
I knew it was real
I said to myself,
"I gotta have a feel!"

I pulled on the  gloves
Clamped a tissue on his nose
I said, STAY CALM!
Then I gently squoze.

The message of this rap:
Protect yourself from germs
Protect yourself from clap
Protect yourself from worms!
You never know what's what
In vomit, blood or spit
My policy is this:
Keep your hands away from it !

Don't give those germs a ride
In the trash can or the sink
Those little suckers hide
In places we don't think.

You mighta picked 'em up
From the door knob or the faucet
So make sure you wash those hands
Dry with paper towel and toss it.

Avoid it if it's wet
And it's someone's body stuff
Urine, tears and spit
They are all wet enough.

Blood is excellent,
In fact it is the worse
When it comes to pathogens
It's like a big red hearse!

Don't forget, IN-DI-RECT!
Wash surfaces kids touch
Those hands been everywhere
Like in their nose and such!

And keep in mind those kids
We taught 'em all to share
They trade earrings and drinks
And the germs, THEY DON' T CARE!

They hitch a ride on pencils
From their mouths and from their hand
Touch the pencil, touch your face
You GOT IT! Understand?

And while I'm on the subject
How's your love life, watch out now
If you're gonna have a partner
It's important to know how
To protect yourself from stuff
Like Hepatitis B
Know your partners, use a condom
If it's wet man you can catch stuff
Just between us, you and me.

The message of this rap
Is condoms, soap and water
And when you're  touching body fluid
Wear gloves just like you oughta.

Wash before you touch your face
Make sure the kids do too
Practice Universal Precautions
Because I tell you to!

Now there's a teacher test
To see how well you learn
To this rap add a verse, give it to the nurse
And a big gold star you'll earn.

The best one gets the prize
That's right, I wanna see your stuff
Come on, add a verse, give it to the nurse
That's it, that's enough.

Ideas for using the rap:

1.          Print out the rap. Cut the verses apart and glue them to index cards. Number each card and pass them out face down with the number up. Whoever has number one starts reading, rap style of course, and the teachers get to be the stars and deliver the message.
2.          An individual, group of teachers (or school nurses) perform the rap.
3.          Everyone gets a copy and the reads the rap together.
4.          Pass out the rap and do a little PR around reading it and writing an extra verse, to be submitted for a prize. Read the whole rap and the extra verses, with the name of the author, at the next staff meeting.
5.          Get a high school drama student or a local thespian to come to the school and do a real rap performance.
6.          Pass out the rap to be read by each staff member. Then give them a principal-mandated multiple-choice quiz, which they pass in. The extra verse is for extra credit.

Have fun!
