Teaching Blood Bourne Pathogens
Dianne Lauterbach, RN CSN

We try to do something creative every year for our annual presention on
BBP.  As I'm sure you know, it is sometimes hard to keep the teacher's
attention when basically it is the same info every year! One year we (4
nurses) did a game show with prizes.  We selected 4 teachers (they
thought it was random, but we actually picked 4 that we thought would
work well!), gave them each a paper horn to blow.  We read the question
and whoever blew the horn first got to answer..At the end they all got
some funny gag gifts.  It was entertaining, but also got the meesage
across to them!

Another year I wrote poem that I read to them:

         ODE TO UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS

I HOPE THAT I SHALL NEVER SEE
A TEACHER TOUCHING BLOOD OR PEE
AND IF YOU FAIL TO LISTEN TO ME
YOUR LIFE COULD BE AT RISK,
YOU SEE...........

HIV, AIDS, AND HEPATITIS, TOO
CAN LURK INSIDE SOMEONE WITH NO OUTSIDE CLUE
AND OTHER BODY FLUIDS, PRAY TELL,
SHOULD NEVER TOUCH YOUR SKIN, AS WELL!

JUST LOOK AT EVERYONE YOU MEET
AS HAVING THESE DISEASES
THEN STOP AND THINK...PUT ON YOUR GLOVES
AND YOU WON'T FALL TO PIECES!

SO, DON'T PUT THESE IN YOUR BOTTOM DRAWER
AND SAY TO YOURSELF..."NOT AGAIN, SOMEMORE!
JUST USE YOUR GLOVES LIKE BOB AND SUE
TO CONFINE OTHER'S FLUIDS THAT MIGHT HARM YOU.

YOUR NURSES KEEP REPEATING THIS
AND NOT BECAUSE WE'RE BANAL
IT'S CAUSE WE LOVE EACH ONE OF YOU
IT'S OSHA THAT IS ANAL!

I wanted to share this in case someone is "stuck"  for a presention for
next year.

If you share this idea with others, please be sure to give credit to the creator who is
